Birkenstock dates back to 1774. Johann Adam Birkenstock was registered in church archives as a shoemaker. His grandson Konrad pioneered contoured insoles and experimented with flexible arch supports and with his sons Carl and Konrad Junior, the company flourished in the early part of the 20th century.
